Surgeon John Duff was a student at Marischal College Aberdeen from 1840 to 1842. He qualified from King's College Aberdeen in 1848.

8 Jan 1856 Staff Surgeon 2nd Class.
1 Oct 1856 Reduced to half-pay.
Aug 1857 Recalled from half pay and appointed Surgeon Royal Artillery.
Malta 28 Dec 1867 Arrived from Canada.
Malta 1868 Surgeon Royal Artillery.
Malta 24 July 1869 Returned to England to join 9 Bde RA in Ireland.
30 Mar 1870 Surgeon Major Royal Artillery.
Feb 1873 Surgeon Major 9 Royal Artillery. Posted to Poma, India.
Oct 1874 Granted 15 months leave from India for the recovery of his health.
18 Nov 1874 Death of Surgeon Major John Duff RA.
24 Feb 1876 At St Judes Church, Southsea Hants, Alice Duff widow of Surgeon Major John Duff RA married Lt Gen Sir Edward Russell HM Indian Army of Ashford Hall Ludlow Shropshire.
