3 June 1868 Assistant Surgeon 107th Bengal Infantry Regiment.

1 Mar 1873 Promoted Surgeon.

1878–1880 Served in the Afghan War.

29 Apr 1878 Arrived from Bombay on sick service.

1879 On garrison duty.

1 Oct 1879 Promoted Surgeon–Major.

15 Apr 1880 Left for England.

1882–1884 Served on the Expedition to Egypt.

1884 Served in the Sudan Expedition under Sir Gerald Graham, as Principal Medical Officer of the Infantry Brigade. Was present at the engagements at El Teb and Temai, where he was mentioned in dispatches, and promoted Surgeon–Major with relative rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

20 May 1884 Special promotion to Surgeon-Major ranking as Lieutenant Colonel.

28 Oct 1889 Promoted Brigade–Surgeon, ranking as Lieutenant Colonel, vice Brigade–Surgeon Thomas Walsh, promoted to Deputy Surgeon–General.

18 July 1894 Surgeon-Colonel.

3 Oct 1898 Surgeon-General.

14 Oct 1899–30 Aug 1902 PMO in South Africa. Was present in the advance on Kimberly, Operations in the Orange Free State (April and May 1900), Operations in the Transvaal in June 1900; Operations in the Transvaal east and west of Pretoria (July to 29 Nov 1900), Operation in Orange River Colony (May to 29 Nov 1900), Operations in Cape Colony south of Orange River (1899 to 1900), Operations in the Transvaal, Orange River Colony, and Cape Colony 30 Nov 1900 to 31 May 1902.1

19 Apr 1901 Made Knight Commander Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) for services in South Africa.

1 Jan 1904 Placed on retired pay.
