Tanker Angel Gabriel
On 23 Sep 1969, the Greek Tanker Angel Gabriel was driven on to rocks in a freak gale off Valletta. United States Navy helicopters, British paratroopers and Maltese fishermen eventually rescued many of the tanker's crew of 50.

In 1969, a 2d stamp was released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Robert Samut on 17 Oct 1869. In 1920, Surgeon-Major R Samut 1st/KOMR had composed the score for the Maltese National anthem.
