Colonel John Noel Atkinson was educated at Trinity College Dublin from where he graduated MB ChB in 1924. He served in the University of Dublin Officers Training Corps prior to being commissioned in the RAMC.

29 Jan 1935 Major RAMC. Specialist in Hygiene.

1935–1943 Served in India.

5 July 1940 Acting Lieutenant Colonel RAMC.

1943–1944 Assistant Director of Medical Services HQ 47 Division.
